PLVision, a software product development company focused on open networking, in collaboration with Shasta Cloud, a leading NaaS provider for in-building enterprise networking and Edgecore Networks, the leading open network solution provider, today announced a new SONiC-based solution to be developed for the TIP OpenLAN Switching group.
SONiC has been widely adopted to date primarily in data centers, but it is increasingly gaining traction in diverse edge applications. OpenLAN Switching is bringing SONiC to a new area of the network, Cloud managed LAN switches, an environment that is characterized by unique requirements such as installation by less skilled technicians, ZTP over the public internet, PoE and diverse multi-gig access options, and significantly lower price points.
This open system/open-source solution is focused on addressing these requirements for Cloud managed switches in the wiring closet, extending the TIP OpenWiFi solution to provide uniform management support for both Wi-Fi access points as well as LAN switches.
PLVision, Shasta Cloud, and Edgecore are bringing forward their unique expertise for this combined solution:
- PLVision is focusing their expertise on the adoption of Community SONiC for the OLS, addressing OLS use cases and creating a standard build for OLS Whitebox to pre-load in the factory, enabling secure ZTP over the public internet for factory default units.
- Shasta Cloud is focused on Cloud integration of these OLS SONiC switches, enabling untrusted ZTP, standard management common to OpenWiFi access points as well introduction of a new Cloud Gateway which will enable hyperscale deployments.
- Edgecore is leading the industry by leveraging its extensive expertise in commercializing SONiC Switches, exemplified by the launch of its innovative OLS product line that includes the ECS4650-54P(TS), and is planning to further expand its range with more models in the future.
PLVision is utilizing Community SONiC to develop this open-source NOS for OLS in close collaboration with the TIP community. As part of the commitment to extending the use cases of SONiC from data center to edge deployments, PLVision previously launched a production ready SONiC-based solution, SONiC Lite, which is also fully OLS-capable with more use cases to come.
