PLVision’s newest SONiC Lite release turns its attention to OLS (OpenLAN Switching) – the centralized management layer that connects access and campus switches to a controller for provisioning, monitoring, and policy management.
Version 1.14.0 ships a major revision of the OLS client, built on the recently published OLS schema v5.0.0. The revised client extends the set of switch capabilities that can be configured and monitored directly from the controller, adding support for DHCP server, storm control, BPDU guard, interface alias (ifAlias), PoE power cycle (do-reset), and LLDP-based PoE negotiation.
It also reports a new set of realtime events back to the controller, including module power failure, module insertion and removal, firmware upgrade status, loop detection across STP and RSTP.
Alongside the OLS revision, this release adds BUM (Broadcast, Unknown-unicast, Multicast) storm control to SONiC Lite, giving operators a way to contain traffic floods at the port level before they degrade the rest of the network. The new storm-control capability is also exposed through the revised OLS client, extending centralized policy control down to individual port thresholds.
The underlying value proposition hasn’t changed: enterprise-class networking on affordable, vendor-neutral hardware. What’s different in 1.14.0 is how much of that hardware can now be managed centrally – across campus footprints, multi-tenant access layers, and edge sites alike.
