PLVision, a software product development company focused on open networking, is continuing its work on the development of a SONiC-based solution for the TIP OpenLAN Switching group. Announced in late 2023, this joint effort with Edgecore and Shasta Cloud introduces a new solution for TIP’s OpenLAN Switching. By leveraging Community SONiC for TIP’s OpenLAN Switching project, addressing OLS use case and offering a ready-to-use solution compatible with Edgecore’s OLS product line that includes the ECS4650-54P(TS), with additional SKUs added in the future, we are extending the SONiC use case for the edge.

SONiC’s growing popularity extends beyond data centers to various edge applications. The OpenLAN Switching initiative takes advantage of this momentum by bringing SONiC to cloud-managed LAN switches. This expansion broadens the SONiC community, driving its use from the Data Center deployments down to the edge. This environment demands specific features, such as automatic deployments, Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP), Power over Ethernet (PoE), and affordable multi-gig access options. Additionally, it expands the TIP OpenWiFi solution, enabling unified management for both Wi-Fi access points and LAN switches.

PLVision has successfully contributed an extended OLS client with Community SONiC support. We are continuing our work with Edgecore to extend this image to be compatible with ECS4650-54P(TS) with more updates next month.

We have also expanded the hardware compatibility list for SONiC Lite, our ready-to-use solution for management and access switches. This customized version of Community SONiC allows for the construction of SONiC-based networks on more cost-efficient hardware. Here you can read more about SONiC Lite key features and its HCL.
